Power bank explodes at Roxas airport

MANILA, Philippines — A power bank sparked and exploded after undergoing x-ray scanning at the Roxas City Airport in Capiz yesterday morning, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said the 72,000 milliampere-hour power bank detected in the luggage of a woman exceeded the 160-watt-hour or 43,000 mAh limit allowed in an aircraft.
The passenger said the power bank was allowed during her inbound flight from Manila. She agreed to turn over the item to a companion waiting outside the terminal.
While arrangements were being made for the turnover, the power bank sparked on the table.
An airport security guard used a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames, but the electronic device exploded.
