3 security guards block Chinese fugitive’s arrest

MANILA, Philippines — After three security guards obstructed a swift arrest, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) failed in its attempt to capture a Chinese fugitive inside a condominium unit in Manila.
The NBI went to the condominium after receiving a tip on Friday that the fugitive was inside one of the units where a scam hub operation was allegedly taking place.
However, the security personnel blocked them, providing the fugitive a chance to escape.
“The guards were so obvious in delaying the arrest,” Noel Bocaling, assistant director of the NBI Intelligence Service, told reporters in Filipino on Friday. “Two guards took turns in tipping those inside the unit.”
When authorities forcibly opened the unit’s door, they saw four Chinese nationals choking an NBI agent who was acting as an asset.
“The suspects learned who was giving information to authorities. When operatives entered the unit, they were able to save the asset,” Bocaling said.
Four Chinese were arrested and will be charged for violating the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act. Charges for obstruction of justice will also be filed against the guards.
Bocaling said the fugitive evaded arrest by walking along a ledge.
