Disqualified Manila congressman insists he is Filipino
MANILA, Philippines — Following the cancellation of his candidacy for the House of Representatives over questions on his citizenship, Manila councilor Luis Chua Uy yesterday reiterated that he is a Filipino.
Uy, who won the congressional seat for Manila’s 6th District, was ordered disqualified by the Commission on Elections Second Division on Thursday.
The Comelec granted the petition of incumbent Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. to disqualify Uy for “not being a natural-born Filipino.”
But Uy insisted that he is a Filipino, born in Sta. Mesa in Manila’s sixth district from a naturalized father and a Filipina mother.
“If your mother is a natural-born Filipina and you are born in the Philippines, then you are a natural-born Filipino. I am a Filipino,” Uy said.
Uy won the congressional seat by getting 64,746 votes, defeating Abante who earned 63,358 votes in the midterm polls.
