DSWD unveils e-buses for PWDs

MANILA, Philippines — Electric buses specifically designed for persons with disability or PWDs will be rolled out soon in Metro Manila as a mode of public transport, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian joined PWDs in riding the e-buses at the agency’s central office grounds in Batasan Hills, Quezon City yesterday.
With an initial fleet of 20 units, the e-buses feature low-floor design, ramps and spaces for wheelchairs as well as closed-circuit television system to monitor the safety of passengers.
“Under President Marcos’ directive, no PWD must suffer discrimination and abuse in public transportation,” Gatchalian said.
He made the remark after a viral video showed a PWD being assaulted by a bus conductor and passengers.
Currently, the e-buses operate as shuttles for PWDs working in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
Gatchalian said the DSWD is coordinating with the transportation department to roll out the e-buses in Quezon City as its first routes.
The e-buses will be operated under the Sustainable Livelihood Program of the DSWD.
