SMC: Skyway freak accident isolated
MANILA, Philippines — Tollway builder San Miguel Corp. (SMC) is assessing the integrity of the NAIA Expressway after a concrete slab fell onto a sport utility vehicle driven by a student on Wednesday.
“Our maintenance teams are conducting a thorough inspection of the NAIAx carriageway to ensure there are no similar risks in the area,” Skyway O&M Corp., the SMC subsidiary operating NAIAx, said in a statement yesterday.
The student was driving along MIA Road in Barangay Tambo, Parañaque on Wednesday when the debris fell from the beams of the expressway.
The concrete shattered the vehicle’s windshield and parts of its hood and roof, causing injuries to the driver.
The student was rushed to a hospital after he sat on the sidewalk waiting to be administered first aid.
The SMC subsidiary said the freak accident was “isolated” and “highly unusual.”
Skyway O&M Corp. also vowed to “extend all necessary assistance” to the family of the victim.
NAIAx connects the Skyway System to Terminals 1, 2 and 3, as well as Entertainment City, Macapagal Boulevard, Sucat Road and road networks to Cavite.
