Demolition of Sta. Mesa fire station slammed

MANILA, Philippines — Heritage advocates have condemned the demolition of one of the oldest fire stations in Manila.
Built in 1919, the Sta. Mesa fire station has been torn down, with only some walls on its two floors left, based on photos and videos taken by Manileños for Heritage.
They described the demolition as an “irreversible loss,” as it “preserved original firefighting tools and technologies, offering rare insight into Manila’s early firefighting history” after surviving the American occupation and World War II.
The group slammed the decision of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines to demolish the fire station.
Manileños for Heritage said the Sta. Mesa fire station survived the war, but not its demolition for a highway connector project along Magsaysay Boulevard.
