CAUAYAN CITY, Isabela, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has exceeded its goal of transforming local government units (LGUs) into smart and sustainable communities, with the agency’s chief seeking to redefine the concept by focusing on innovations tailored to the needs of every locality.

Sancho Mabborang, DOST chief for regional operations, said 91 LGUs have participated in the Smart and Sustainable Communities program since its launch in 2023, surpassing the initial target of 80.

“We’re oversubscribed. At the moment, we have deployed 86 technologies in these LGUs. We have come up with over 40 science, technology and innovation plants. Other LGUs are joining. We’re waiting for more, about 10 to 15, so we can reach 100 before the end of the year,” Mabborang said.

The latest LGU to join the program is Butuan City, which launched its Smart Eco Butuan 2040 Roadmap on April 25.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. is urging other LGUs to join the program and maximize technologies, saying that this would lead to better governance.
