MANILA, Philippines — As the onset of the rainy season nears, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it is ready to respond to emergencies and other calamities.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil gave the assurance as he led the annual inspection of disaster response equipment at Camp Crame in Quezon City yesterday.

“We are 100 percent prepared to help,” Marbil told reporters.

The PNP showcased some of the 8,422 search and rescue equipment, which include gas-driven chainsaws, saw machines, emergency shelters, special purpose vehicles, speed boats and fiberglass boats.

Marbil also showed a water purifier, which can make seawater potable for drinking.

The PNP has 9,328 transportation vehicles and 26,110 communication devices at its disposal during natural calamities.

The Special Action Force, Marbil said, is trained and equipped not only for armed conflict, but also for disaster response operations.

Up to 21,840 police personnel are trained in search and rescue missions, the PNP said.
