Don’t politicize free train rides – Palace

MANILA, Philippines — Critics of the administration should refrain from politicizing the four-day free train rides ordered by President Marcos as part of Labor Day celebrations, Malacañang said yesterday.
Marcos on Tuesday announced the all-day free rides on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) as well as Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 beginning yesterday until May 3.
Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said fewer people would benefit if the free rides were offered on Labor Day only.
Castro also shrugged off criticism that the free rides were implemented amid the drop in the approval and trust ratings of Marcos in recent surveys.
“May 1 is Labor Day. We cannot offer this to our workers in December,” she said.
The free rides in Metro Manila’s three rail lines for Labor Day will be implemented annually, the Department of Transportation said.
The DOTr will shoulder the costs of free rides, estimated at P10 million each for the MRT-3 and LRT-1 per day and around P7 million for the LRT-2.– Ghio Ong
