Rizal church shut down for ‘illegal recruitment’

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has shut down a church in Baras, Rizal over allegations that it is being used as a front for illegal recruitment.
Czar Eric Nuqui, chief of the NBI-Cavite North District Office, said a member of the church allegedly collected P50,000 each from the victims to whom the suspect promised jobs in Japan, Papua New Guinea and South Korea.
“We received information that some victims were able to leave the country, but did not get the work they were promised,” Nuqui said.
The victims were allegedly promised employment as factory and construction workers, tea pickers, clerks, accountants and engineers, with salaries ranging from P36,000 to P120,000.
The NBI said the victims, who were issued only tourist visas, were instructed to introduce themselves as missionaries at immigration counters.
The Department of Migrant Workers said the recruiter targeted the parishioners and collected fees despite the lack of authority.
