PNP intensifies visibility in areas with intense rivalries

MANILA, Philippines — After a reelectionist mayor in Cagayan was shot dead during a campaign sortie, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its visibility in areas with intense political rivalries with just over two weeks before the May 12 election.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said people would feel safer if they would see more police personnel on the streets.
The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) issued an urgent call to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), National Bureau of Investigation and the police to resolve the killing of Rizal mayor Joel Ruma during a campaign sortie on April 23.
“The incident underscores the grave dangers faced by public servants, particularly during the election season… The heinous act of violence has not only shaken us but also deeply affected the community he so faithfully served,” said LMP president and Mayor JB Bernos of La Paz, Abra.
“Join us in condemning this violence and in supporting peaceful and honest elections in a safe environment for all,” Bernos also said.
Marbil, who visited Cagayan on Friday, said a special investigation task group is gathering evidence and statements from witnesses.
Apart from beefing up police presence, Marbil instructed the Police Security and Protection Group to provide temporary escorts to politicians who are receiving death threats.
It usually takes one to two months for a politician to get protective security personnel as applications go through police validation and authorization from the Comelec.
There are at least 34 areas of concern under the red category – those with a history of election-related violence, intense political rivalry and threats from rebel groups.
