Haggling over catfish leads to village officer’s death

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A village official was killed following a knife attack on Good Friday in New Lucena town in Iloilo.
According to police reports, suspect Erwin Alegre was asking a vendor in Barangay Dawis to lower the price of catfish by P5 per kilo. However, the haggle reportedly led to an argument, prompting Alegre to leave the place.
Barangay Kagawad Eric Porquez, who was at a store nearby, reportedly accosted Alegre, which led to another argument and, ultimately, to the stabbing.
Alegre, who was arrested in a police pursuit, claimed that Porquez held him by the collar and punched him, prompting him to retaliate by stabbing the village official.
Lt. Jerson Baldevia, New Lucena police chief, said operatives were able to trace Alegre in Janiuay town after an informant provided details of the incident.
