Congressional aspirant nabbed for issuing bouncing checks

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A businessman running for a congressional seat in the May elections was arrested for allegedly issuing checks without sufficient funds in this province on Monday.
Eugiene Salom, 37, did not resist when police officers arrested him in front of the Hall of Justice in Barangay Real in Calamba where he attended a court hearing for other cases, according to Lt. Col. Victor Sobrepeña, Calamba police chief.
The arrest was based on a warrant issued by Judge Krisandra Ann del Mundo Malalauan of the Municipal Trial Court Branch 3, Fourth Judicial Region for violation of Batas Pambansa 22 or the Anti-Bouncing Check Law.
Salom’s lawyer posted bail of P120,000 for his temporary liberty.
He said his arrest was politically motivated, noting he is leading in surveys among candidates seeking the congressional seat in the lone district of Calamba.
Salom is running under the Akay National Political Party.
