MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday recorded five volcanic tremors, lasting between three to five minutes, at Taal Volcano in Batangas.

Phivolcs also recorded a moderate ash emission, reaching 500 meters high and moving west-southwest.

Following this, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines issued a Notice to Airmen (Notam) yesterday about the “eruption of Taal Volcano” with a “horizontal/vertical extent of volcanic ash clouds” at 11,000 feet from the surface.

It prohibited aircraft from flying close to the volcano until 9:06 a.m. today.

According to state volcanologists, Taal also produced 1,200 tons of sulfur dioxide flux in the last 24 hours.

As Alert Level 1 remains in effect, Phivolcs said entry into Taal Volcano Island covered by the permanent danger zone, especially the main crater and Daang Kastila fissures, “is strictly prohibited.”

State volcanologists warned that stream-driven, phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations of volcanic gas may occur.
