Marikina road rage: LTO summons SUV driver, owner

Bella Cariaso - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office has ordered the driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) who figured in a road rage incident in Marikina City to appear before the LTO’s National Capital Region (NCR) office tomorrow.

The LTO said that charges of reckless driving, disregarding traffic signs, obstruction of traffic and improper person to operate a motor vehicle await the motorist should he fail to appear.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II earlier ordered the LTO-NCR to issue a show cause order against the registered owner of a white Nissan Patrol (NFY 4437), whose driver was seen in a video hitting a bicycle and attacking its rider, after the video went viral on social media.

LTO-NCR director Roque Verzosa III warned the registered owner that failure to appear and submit an affidavit would be construed as a waiver and authorities will be forced to resolve the issue based on available records.

The video shows the SUV had rammed the bicycle and its rider along Dragon street. The SUV driver then alighted from the vehicle and engaged the rider in a fistfight, obstructing the flow of traffic in the area.

Verzosa added that a show cause order was issued against the registered owner in Novaliches, Quezon City and the driver of the SUV at his house in Antipolo City.

According to Verzosa, the registration of the vehicle would be preventively suspended for 90 days unless the case is resolved earlier.

Mendoza reminded drivers and motorists anew to be patient and show respect when it comes to road sharing following the recent incidents of road rage.

“Motorists should respect other road users to prevent the repeat of road rage incidents,” he said.
