MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. has appealed to members of militant groups who will hold demonstrations for the second State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Marcos in July to respect the PNP uniform.

Acorda made the plea as the PNP is gearing up its preparations for Marcos’ SONA next month.

During a press conference on Monday, he said protesters should do away with their practice of throwing paint at police officers.

Acorda assured demonstrators that police officers will observe maximum tolerance and respect their right to freedom of expression for as long as they do it within the bounds of the law.

He is hoping protesters will adhere to his call as police uniforms are expensive.

“Two reasons: what the police officers will spend to replace their uniforms, and respect for the uniform itself,” Acorda said of the reasons he hopes will give protesters pause.

The PNP will also deploy its officers from the Human Rights Affairs Office to monitor possible human rights violations that may be committed by both the police and demonstrators during the SONA.
