2 students drown in Cagayan beach

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines — Two college students drowned during a picnic in Ballesteros, Cagayan on Saturday.

Lucy Ann Ugalino, 23, of the Cagayan State University, and Ryan Mendoza, 21, of the Northern Cagayan Colleges Foundation Inc. were swimming in a beach in Barangay Cabaritan when they were reportedly swept away by the current.

The victims’ companions sought help after failing to see them on the shore.

Ugalino was declared dead on arrival at the Ballesteros District Hospital.

Members of a search and rescue mission recovered Mendoza’s body the following day.
