Over 6,000 Paeng-hit families still in shelters

MANILA, Philippianes — It has been more than two weeks since Severe Tropical Storm Paeng devastated a large part of the country, yet more than 6,000 displaced families  are still in temporary shelters nationwide.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Paeng affected 1.4 million families or over 5.5 million people.

Of the figure, 6,029 families or 25,672 people are still in 136 evacuation centers, according to a situational report released by the NDRRMC yesterday.

Data showed there are 4,326 families or 18,017 residents of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) who remain in 81 shelters in their towns or cities.

The NDRRMC said Paeng’s total death toll remains at 160 and 29 persons remain missing.

Most of the casualties are recorded in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, particularly in the province of Maguindanao.
