Dengue death toll in Western Visayas climbs to 46

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Western Visayas has recorded additional fatalities due to dengue as cases in the region continue to increase.

The Department of Health (DOH) – Western Visayas office logged nine deaths from July 17 to 23, bringing the total to 46 since January.

Negros Occidental and Antique each reported three new fatalities; Iloilo, two, and this city, one.

The DOH said Western Visayas logged 7,825 cases from January to July 23, an increase of 513 percent compared to 1,227 recorded during the same period last year.

Negros Occidental topped the list of provinces in the region with the highest number of cases at 2,747.

Aklan had earlier declared a state of calamity due to dengue as cases increased by 684 percent.

Western Visayas is among 15 of the 17 regions in the country that have surpassed the dengue epidemic threshold.

Dengue cases in the country rose by more than 100 percent this year, with 82,597 cases recorded from Jan. 1 to July 16. Most of the cases are from Central Luzon followed by Central Visayas and Metro Manila.
