No plumes, but Kanlaon quakes continue
MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island is not releasing steam plumes, but it continued to show increased activity after 21 more volcanic earthquakes were recorded from Sunday to yesterday.
The volcano is releasing an average of 151 tons of sulfur dioxide per day, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said that because of the increase in the number of volcanic quakes, Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 1 or low-level unrest.
Entry into the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is prohibited as well as flying of aircraft close to the volcano’s summit as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur any time.
On Sunday, state seismologists advised residents and local government units to closely monitor Kanlaon after they recorded 41 volcanic quakes around the summit area since June 30.
