MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go on Tuesday visited families in Quezon City whose houses were destroyed by a fire that broke out in Barangay UP Campus on May 2.

Go provided relief items to the victims and assured them of government assistance to help them rebuild their homes.

Go and his team distributed grocery packs, shirts, meals and vitamins to 106 families or 459 individuals at Suntay Hall in Barangay UP Campus.

Selected beneficiaries were given bicycles, cell phones, shoes, basketballs, volleyballs and first aid kits.

Go said he would remain steadfast in strengthening fire prevention measures.

He said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)’s modernization program would ensure a more proactive response from the government.

Go authored Republic Act 11589, which seeks to improve the capabilities of the BFP by implementing a 10-year modernization program, which includes recruitment of more firefighters and acquisition of new equipment.

The senator said he would push for the passage of Senate Bill 1228 or the Mandatory Evacuation Center Act, which aims to establish permanent evacuation sites in every city, province and municipality.

Under the proposed measure, evacuation centers will be equipped to provide immediate aid to victims of calamities.
