2 killed in Basilan gun attack
ZAMBOANGA CITY MANILA, Philippines — Unidentified armed men attacked a convoy of vehicles in Lantawan, Basilan yesterday, killing two persons and wounding two others.
The victims were with the group of Barangay Bagbagon councilman Suhod Manasal, who were on their way to Isabela City when they were shot in Barangay Bulansa.
Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, Joint Task Force Basilan commander, said the victims retaliated, triggering a brief shootout.
The Basilan police said the incident could be related to the elections.
In Lanao del Sur, six persons were arrested at a checkpoint in Sultan Naga Dimaporo town on Tuesday after they were caught transporting guns and explosives.
Soldiers and policemen manning the checkpoint impounded a rescue vehicle used by the suspects which was owned by the local government unit of Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur.
Maj. Moamar Solog, acting Sultan Naga Dimaporo police chief, said Esmail Wali, Adam Tando, Fausto Guinita, Tristan Bendecion, Sangbaan Obinay and Resil Revillas failed to present the needed documents, including an exemption from the election gun ban. – John Unson
