Laguna cop tagged in ex-OFW slay

Ed Amoroso - The Philippine Star

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A police officer has been tagged in the murder of a former overseas Filipino worker, whose burnt body was found with a gunshot wound in Infanta, Quezon in February.

Renita Cornejo, 50, of Los Baños, Laguna, identified S/Sgt. Ronnel Aguilar of the Laguna police as the one who allegedly killed her sister Renalyn Umali, 40.

The family said Umali was last seen on Feb. 9 on her way to Alaminos town to supposedly meet Aguilar, who was allegedly her boyfriend.

Cornejo said her sister failed to return home, prompting the family to file a report with the Los Baños police.

The family received a phone call from the Infanta police, informing them that human skeletal remains were found in Sitio Korosep in Barangay Magsaysay on Feb. 15.

The body was burned to hide its identity before it was thrown into a ravine, police said.

Cornejo positively identified the body as her sister, based on the dentures and personal belongings recovered at the scene.

The victim’s mother Juanita Fulgencio said police have yet to locate Aguilar.

“We are seeking justice for my daughter. We are appealing to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos to help us attain justice, especially since the case involves a police officer,” Fulgencio said.
