Cagayan Valley logs 2 dengue deaths

Victor Martin - The Philippine Star

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines — Two persons have died of dengue while hundreds of others contracted the mosquito-borne disease in Cagayan Valley, the regional health office said yesterday.

Reports said a total of 787 dengue cases were recorded from January to April, higher than the 492 cases recorded during the same period last year.

The province of Isabela recorded the most number of cases with 533 and one fatality, followed by Cagayan with 263 and one death.

Nueva Vizcaya logged 103 cases; Quirino, 46, and Batanes Group of Islands, two.

A majority of the patients are 18 years old and below.

The provincial and municipal health offices in the region were directed to conduct massive anti-dengue campaigns to prevent a possible outbreak.

Residents were advised to clean their surroundings to prevent the areas from becoming breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Health officials said the increase in dengue cases could be due to frequent rain occurrence, especially in the past few weeks.
