Reds attack soldiers in Northern Samar; 1 wounded

Miriam Desacada - The Philippine Star

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines — Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked government troopers conducting community support program in three barangays in Las Navas, Northern Samar on Monday, leaving a soldier wounded.

The military said the attacks occurred in Barangays San Jose, Epaw and Sag-od.

NPA rebels belonging to the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee were believed to be behind the atrocities. The group was also tagged in the burning of construction equipment as well as the killing of a barangay chairman in the town last July.

The wounded soldier, Pfc. Darrell Besañes, was airlifted to the Catarman Doctors Hospital, where he is now in stable condition.

Col. Perfecto P Peñaredondo, 803rd Brigade Commander, condemned the attacks, saying it would disrupt again the delivery of services for residents in the area.
