BuCor firm on securing Bilibid reservation

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) yesterday stood pat on its decision to build a wall along a road in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP)’s reservation, which sealed off a pathway for residents.

On Friday night, the BuCor erected a wall along the NBP Road, affecting residents of Katarungan Village 1 and 2.

After a few hours, the wall was demolished by irate residents.

The BuCor maintained that the move was part of its mandate to ensure the security of the prison facility amid reports of illegal activities at the NBP camp.

The wall aims to restrict access of Katarungan Village residents to the NBP compound, the BuCor said.

There are more access points for the residents to go through despite the closure of the road, the bureau added.

Muntinlupa Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said the BuCor did not seek permit from city hall before building the wall.

The city council had passed six resolutions on the matter, one of which declared BuCor Director General Gerald Bantag persona non grata.
