MANILA, Philippines — The number of COVID-19 cases in Taguig has dropped by at least 87 percent.

The city’s public information office said there are 271 active cases in Taguig as of Friday, lower by 87.24 percent when COVID-19 infections peaked at 2,125 last Aug. 30.

The barangays with the most number of active cases are Western Bicutan with 28; Pinagsama, 21; Ususan, 20; Fort Bonifacio, 19, and Bagumbayan, 18.

Mayor Lino Cayetano said in a statement that the lower number of active cases in Taguig “was achieved through continuous aggressive testing and active case finding.”

Cayetano said Taguig has led the country in government testing with over 35 free testing centers across the city.

The city’s case fatality rate is at 0.80 while its deaths are at 42 per 100,000 population, which Cayetano said are low compared to national and international averages.

Another good development is that at least 243 or 90 percent of their active cases are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.

“We believe that this can be attributed to both behavioral change and aggressive vaccination,” Cayetano said.

Despite the downward trend of COVID-19 cases in the city, Cayetano urged residents not to lower their guard as the virus remains a threat.

“It has taken us a while to get here – our job now is to help stay the course, continue to learn, adapt and do better,’ he said.

“We should keep transmission and deaths low and not let irresponsibility take us into another surge,” Cayetano added.
