4 Chinese beached in Palawan

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has vowed to look into how four Chinese fishermen ended up in the waters off Rizal, Palawan last Thursday.

The Chinese were identified as Fu Wan Ke, Li Bang, Lu Yunian and Quin Tong. Two of them were already dead when they were found by a local fisherman.

Li reportedly died after he was hit by falling debris from their fishing boat while Tong drowned, PCG spokesperson Commodore Armand Balilo said yesterday.

Balilo said the PCG would only determine the circumstances and would not investigate the matter, noting that bad weather could have beached the Chinese.

He said the PCG advised the Chinese embassy to coordinate with the PCG-Palawan district as well as with the provincial government.

Reports said the Chinese left Hainan, China on board a fishing boat on July 9.

They reportedly encountered bad weather, prompting them to abandon their boat on a life raft.

Local fisherman Mario Mabuhay, 51, spotted the Chinese drifting in the waters off Canipaan.

Mabuhay towed the raft to the shore.
