Cavite town mayor resigns
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Citing old age and health reasons, Mayor Walter Echevarria Jr. of General Mariano Alvarez town in Cavite resigned from his post yesterday.
His daughter, Vice Mayor Maricel Torres, took over his post after taking her oath before Cavite Gov. Juanito Remulla yesterday.
Councilor Angela Lenin Paycana was named vice mayor.
In a statement posted on the municipal government’s Facebook page, Echevarria cited “changes in my health condition” for his resignation. He did not give details.
He said General Mariano Alvarez needs a leader who is capable of leading the town amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He called on his constituents to continue to support the projects he had started.
Echevarria, said to be 75 or 76 years old, reportedly filed for an indefinite leave a few weeks ago.
He was mayor from 2001 to 2010 and reassumed his post in 2013. He started as barangay secretary in 1972 and served as councilor for six years and vice mayor for three years.
