Boat capsizes off Surigao Norte; 29 rescued

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — Twenty-nine people, including three crewmembers of a passenger boat, were rescued when the vessel capsized off the coast of Barangay Doña Helene in Socorro, Surigao del Norte.

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Surigao del Norte commander Elaine Pangilinan said MBCA Emerald, which sailed from Lanuza, Surigao del Sur, capsized after it was hit by strong waves.

Crewmembers of two passing motorboats MBCA Marian and MBC Zac Gregor helped rescue the passengers of the distressed vessel.

Responding PCG and Philippine National Police Maritime Group personnel brought the rescued passengers to Socorro.
