Taal unrest: 21,780 villagers left homes

Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — At least 21,780 people have been displaced by the continued unrest of Taal Volcano since two weeks ago.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 1,668 families or 6,000 persons remain in 26 evacuation while 4,359 families or about 16,000 individuals are staying with their friends or relatives. The affected residents are from 145 barangays.

Around P16 million worth of assistance was distributed to the evacuees, including family food packs and non-food items such as hygiene and family kits and tents.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 3.

This means magma extruding from the main crater could drive an explosive eruption.

Phivolcs warned the public of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami in case of a strong eruption.

Thirty-five volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours, including 17 volcanic tremor events that lasted for one to 49 minutes.

Sulfur dioxide gas emissions averaged 5,286 tons per day, which included steam-rich plumes that rose 900 meters.
