MANILA, Philippines — Former vice mayor Akmad Ampatuan of Shariff Aguak town in Maguindanao and three members of his private armed group (PAG) surrendered their firearms on Monday.

Ampatuan, Abby Aguak, Pendatun Ampatuan and Gani Macmod turned over three M16 rifles and an M14, Brig. Gen. Eden Ugale, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BAR) police director, said.

Ugale said Ampatuan first expressed the intention of his group to surrender their weapons last April 24.

Ampatuan’s group is included in the list of active PAGs of the Philippine National Police-Directorate of Intelligence.

Police said Ampatuan wanted to clear his name.

Ugale asked other leaders and members of armed groups in BAR to also surrender their firearms.
