Sara’s HNP in coalition talks with major parties

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The local party of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), is reportedly in talks with five national political parties for a possible coalition to support her candidacy in the 2022 presidential elections.

Carpio has remained mum about her political plans next year, saying she has yet to decide on the matter.

Officials of the HNP reportedly gave Carpio until the end of this month to decide whether to seek the presidency or not.

Carpio said she still could not decide even as she had twice rejected a request of her partymates for her to follow in the footsteps of her father President Duterte, whose term will end on June 30 next year.

She said she is busy addressing the surge in COVID cases in her city and she has no time to think about politics.

HNP is reportedly in talks with Lakas-CMD, National Unity Party, Nacionalista Party, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino and People’s Reform Party, according to former Davao del Norte governor Anthony del Rosario, spokesman for the HNP.

Carpio has said she has no plans of joining any national political party, and she would remain with HNP, a regional group based in Southern Mindanao, and with the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, which is based in Davao City.

Del Rosario said the five major parties have signified interest in a possible coalition with the HNP.

The proposed arrangement for the coalition is reportedly for the HNP to choose the candidates for president, vice president and the Senate, Del Rosario said.
