La Union city imposes liquor ban over COVID-19 cases

Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines — The city government of San Fernando in La Union imposed a liquor ban starting yesterday until July 15 following a surge in COVID cases.

Mayor Hermenegildo Gualberto issued an order on Saturday, noting the city’s 307 active cases as of July 2.

“There is a need to intensify efforts and reintroduce control measures to abate further transmission of COVID in the city,” the order said.

Aside from the liquor ban, Gualberto ordered the strict implementation of curfew hours and prohibited the holding of activities that could contribute to the transmission of the virus.

The ban covers the sale, distribution and consumption of intoxicating beverages such as beer and wine.

The curfew is from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. as provided under an ordinance of the provincial government.
