Comelec logs over 4 million new voters
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has surpassed its target of four million new registered voters for the May 2022 general elections.
In an interview with “The Chiefs” on One News/TV5 on Wednesday night, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the poll body recorded 4.3 million new voters ahead of the Sept. 30 registration deadline.
“We expected around four million voter registrants pero parang nasa 4.3 million na tayo,” Jimenez said.
He said the total number of registered voters has reached over 60 million, less than one million away from the Comelec’s target for next year’s elections.
Jimenez added the Comelec would implement “extreme measures” for the 22 elections, such as limiting to only five the number of people in polling precincts to avoid the spread of the virus.
