2 ambush victims accused of swindling
MANILA, Philippines — Two persons killed in an ambush in Quezon City on Wednesday were respondents in an estafa or swindling case, according to a report by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).
The cases against Mark Anthony Ballesteros and Darrel Anne Bonifacio were filed before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 105, which dismissed the charges on Oct. 22, 2019.
Probers are investigating whether the estafa charges are related to the attack on the victims in Barangay Doña Mariana.
QCPD director Brig. Gen. Antonio Yarra earlier said at least four assailants could be involved in the murder.
Probers said two men on a motorcycle were spotted beside the victims’ vehicle, based on a witness account.
The back rider, armed with an M-16 rifle, shot at the victims, Yarra said in a statement.
One of the assailants dragged the woman out of the vehicle. She tried to escape but was shot by the suspect.
The assailants and two others on another motorcycle sped away from the scene. Probers recovered at least 24 bullet casings at the scene.
