MANILA, Philippines — The Senate committee on local government has approved a bill seeking the creation of the Metropolitan Davao Development Authority (MDDA) in a bid to spur economic growth and hasten the delivery of services in the area.

Under the proposal, the MDDA shall be composed of Davao City and certain towns and cities in Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro and Davao Occidental.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio expressed support for the measure, but said she would consult the regional development council on some of its provisions, such as the power to grant franchise to public utility vehicles operating within MDDA and election of an MDDA chairman.

The National Economic and Development Authority and Department of the Interior and Local Government also backed the proposed measure.
