Marawi military camp eyed for CARP coverage
MANILA, Philippines — A portion of Camp Keithley, a military reservation in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, will be distributed to farmers as part of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
Agrarian Reform Secretary John Castriciones and Mindanao Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform Mohammad Yacob recently led the pledge of commitment to support the distribution of the government-owned land.
“We are happy that with the support of the governor and mayors, legitimizing the ownership of Marawi farmers over the land that they deserve to own a long time ago will now become a reality. This land is part of their ancestral domain. It should be returned to them,” Castriciones said.
Yacob said they are grateful for the government’s advocacy to return ancestral land to its rightful owners.
Camp Keithley was a former US military base built in 1946.
On Dec. 23, 1953, former president Elpidio Quirino converted the 6,667-hectare land, which was renamed Camp Amai Pakpak, into a military reservation.
Department of Agrarian Reform and Lanao del Norte officials met on Monday for an organization and coordination meeting in preparation for land distribution activities in Marawi.
