Foreign-trained NPA bomb expert surrenders
ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A New People’s Army (NPA) rebel has surrendered after 35 years in the underground movement.
The surrenderee said he joined the NPA when he was 12, and was sent to Malaysia for training on how to make bombs. He was reportedly a former leader of the rebels’ liquidation squad special operations group based in this city.
“I surrendered for my family,” he said, referring to his wife and four children, when he turned himself in to the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
He also turnover over his M16 rifle with magazine and ammunition.
Lt. Col. Gervacio Balmaceda, CIDG-Western Visayas director, said the surrenderee was a big loss to the NPA as his role as a bomb maker had a big impact in the organization.
In Sultan Kudarat, 21 NPA guerrillas surrendered and turned over their firearms in Lebak town yesterday.
