Face-to-face non-essential government activities banned in Davao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Face-to-face non-essential activities in all local and national government offices in this city are banned starting today until Aug. 31.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio issued an executive order banning all government events, such as inaugurations, anniversaries, ribbon-cutting, turnovers, groundbreaking activities, launching programs, birthdays, press conferences, oath-takings, photo opportunities, retirement and welcome honors, testimonials, summer outings, and similar activities.

“Our contact tracing team found out that government offices were also sources of infections... Both national and local government offices are guilty of this. So we created an executive order which bans government events. It means these events are prohibited as long as there is a calamity,” she said.

Carpio said such events are prohibited even if only 25 people are attending.

“Even if there’s only one left, it is forbidden. We don’t have problems with virtual events since it does not risk COVID-19 transmission,” she said.
