MANILA, Philippines — A man who reportedly shot dead another man was himself killed by a police officer in a firefight in Manila on Friday night.

Edgardo Maluto, 52, allegedly shot Alinor Sharief, 51, twice at a restaurant on Arlegui street in Quiapo for “no apparent reason,” according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

Witnesses called the MPD’s Barbosa police station, which sent a team to pursue Maluto.

The MPD reported that upon reaching Nicanor Reyes street, Maluto reportedly shot at the approaching police officers. Pat. Ramon Samson, who was ahead of his colleagues, shot and killed Maluto.

Police recovered bullet fragments from the restaurant and a .357-caliber revolver with four bullets along Nicanor Reyes street.

The case is set for further investigation, police said.

Sharief is recovering at the Metropolitan Medical Center.
