MANILA, Philippines — A 47-year-old policeman assigned in Maguidanao has died from complications due to COVID-19.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said the patient, who had diabetes, was brought to a hospital on Monday due to fever and cough.

The result of the policeman’s reverse transcription-poymerase chain reaction test showed he was positive for the virus.

Fifty-eight PNP personnel have died after contracting the virus since last year, 31 of them since last January.

The PNP recorded 87 new cases, 24 of them assigned in Metro Manila, 19 from various administrative and operational support units of the PNP and 44 from various regional offices.

There are 1,540 active cases in the PNP. Forty-four are confined in hospitals while 496 are recuperating in isolation facilities.

Eleazar said 20,963 PNP members have been infected since last year. At least 19,365 or 92.37 percent of the patients have recovered.

A total of 12,864 police personnel have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
