3 cops in curfew violator’s death probed

Neil Jayson Servallos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Two of four police officers tagged in the death of a curfew violator in General Trias, Cavite were subjected to a pre-charge investigation along with their superior for neglect of duty and grave misconduct.

Cpls. Jerome Vibar and Kennete Mercene were removed from their posts along with their superior, General Trias police chief Lt. Col. Mario Solero, according to Col. John Guyguyon, executive officer of the Philippine National Police-Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management.

The investigation will determine whether the officers can be charged administratively, Guyguyon said.

He said Solero would be investigated for failing to “take corrective action either before or during the incident.”

Vibar and Mercene failed to rush Darren Peñaredondo to the nearest hospital.

Two other officers earlier implicated in the case were cleared and the complaints against them were dropped, Guyguyon said.

Peñaredondo died of a heart attack early this month after the officers reportedly punished him with 300 squat pumps for violating quarantine rules.
