2 b’gay watchmen in curfew violator’s death face charges

Neil Jayson Servallos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines  —  Police will file charges against two barangay watchmen tagged in the death of a 26-year-old man, whom they allegedly beat up for violating the curfew in Calamba, Laguna.

Arjay Abierta and Joel Ortiz, both of Barangay Turbina, will be charged with homicide in connection with the death of Ernanie Jimenez, Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana, spokesman for the Philippine National Police, said yesterday.

Jimenez, who was earlier identified as Ernanie Lumban, died at the Calamba Center Hospital on Friday, or two days after the alleged beating incident.

Reports said Jimenez came from job hunting when the watchmen accosted him at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Witnesses said they saw the watchmen kick Jimenez until he fell.

Barangay officials denied this, saying Jimenez tried to escape, causing him to slip and his head to hit the pavement.

The charges will be filed once the victim’s family returns from Quezon province, according to Lt. Col. Chitadel Gaoiran, spokesperson for the Laguna police.

Authorities have yet to locate Abierta and Ortiz.
