MANILA, Philippines — Forty-four more railway employees contracted COVID-19, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

In its latest tally on Tuesday, 522 personnel tested positive for COVID-19, up from 478 last Monday, the DOTr said.

Most of the new cases are employees of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 with 23, followed by the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) with 11 and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) with 10. The LRT-2 logged no new cases.

There are currently a total of 117 COVID-19 cases among LRT-1 personnel, 143 at the LRT-2, and 131 each at the MRT-3 and PNR.

With more rail workers catching the virus, DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade ordered the mass testing of all 7,475 employees of the four rail services.

As of Tuesday, the agency said the following have been tested for COVID-19: 377 out of the 1,185 LRT-1 personnel; 571 out of the 1,277 LRT-2 personnel; 860 out of the 3,284 MRT-3 personnel; and 1,013 out of the 1,729 PNR personnel.

Despite the surge, the MRT-3 announced it deployed 14 trains yesterday, higher than the 10 to 12 trains running since Monday.

The DOTr announced the MRT-3, LRT-1 and LRT-2 would run fewer trains since Monday due to widespread COVID-19 infection among their personnel, while the PNR would resume its operation tomorrow with only 10 to 12 trains running.
