MANILA, Philippines — Four suspected kidnappers were killed during an alleged shootout with police officers in Quezon City yesterday.

The unidentified suspects reportedly opened fire at operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) and Quezon City Police District QCPD) in Barangay Old Balara at around 1:30 a.m.

QCPD director Brig. Gen. Danilo Macerin said lawmen pursued the suspects after they kidnapped Edmer Tumagan and Michael Bongcaras, employees of a construction firm, along Commonwealth Avenue at around 1 a.m.

Police had been keeping a close watch on the suspects, who are members of a kidnap-for-ransom gang, for about a month after a confidential informant told authorities they were planning to kidnap the construction company’s owner, officials said.

The suspects had flagged down a gray Chevrolet sedan but instead of their target, only the company’s employees were on board, police said.

The suspects left the area in the victims’ vehicle and a Kia Besta van.

Macerin said the suspects were spotted by police officers at a checkpoint. The suspects turned left towards Zuzuarregi street and opened fire at the lawmen.

“A brief shootout ensued, which resulted in the neutralization of the four suspects while the victims were successfully and safely rescued,” he said.

Police recovered an M-16 rifle, three .45 caliber pistols and a .38 caliber revolver from the suspects.

Probers have yet to establish the suspects’ identities.
