15 Pasay frontliners positive for COVID-19 after Sinovac jab
MANILA, Philippines — Fifteen frontliners at the Pasay City General Hospital tested positive on Monday after receiving Sinovac Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine, an official said yesterday.
Most of the frontliners – two doctors, four nurses, four nursing aides, a medical technologist, a pharmacist and three administrative personnel – were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, according to PCGH office-in-charge Dr. John Victor de Gracia, who also contracted the virus.
He said the virus “failed to fully impact their health” due to the first dose of Sinovac vaccine they received.
“With any vaccine brand, there is always a possibility that you would be infected. But (the vaccine) prevents you from becoming a severe case that would need hospitalization,” De Gracia said.
He added that the second dose would be given starting next week.
The COVID-19 cases prompted De Gracia to issue a memorandum ordering the temporary closure of the hospital’s outpatient department starting on Thursday.
As for AstraZeneca’s vaccine, De Gracia said it will be given during the last week of April.
As of March 25, Pasay recorded 1,024 active cases, 10,814 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 9,522 recoveries and 268 deaths.
