ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The military launched air and ground assaults  against members of the Islamic State-linked Dawla Islamiyah in Ampatuan, Maguindanao on Thursday, leaving four militants dead and several others wounded.

Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr. said a militant was killed when Scout Rangers encountered a group led by Salahuddin Hassan in Barangay Saniag. The three other militants were slain in the firefight in Barangay Salman.

Air and artillery strikes targeted the stronghold of the militants in Barangay Saniag.

Vinluan said soldiers recovered improvised explosive devices and bomb components.

Personnel of the Joint Task Force Central under Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy launched the offensive after receiving information on the presence of members of the terrorist group from civilians.

Vinluan said troops of the First Scout Ranger Battalion seized a camp of the militants, which had foxholes and trenches.

Battalion commander Lt. Col. Raymond Rapi said a soldier was wounded in the operations.
