MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has placed under granular lockdown at least 29 barangays in the city amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.

In his Executive Order No. 11, Moreno locked down Barangays 1, 50, 106, 109, 184, 192, 209, 296, 493, 515, 586, 636, 669, 790, 883 and 875 from March 24 to March 27.

These barangays were classified as critical zones.

Thirteen other barangays were put on lockdown starting today until March 25: Barangays 107, 147, 256, 262, 281, 297, 350, 385, 513, 519, 624, 696 and 831.

Kusang Loob street in Barangay 353 and NYK-Fil Ship Management Building in Barangay 658 were also placed on lockdown.

Moreno banned religious activities for Holy Week to prevent the spread of the virus.

He appealed to motel owners to allow the city government to use their facilities for quarantine.

There were 2,656 active COVID-19 cases in Manila as of yesterday.

Makati COVID-19 cases up

In Makati, the number of active COVID-19 cases reached more than 1,000 over the weekend.

According to the city health department, Makati logged 1,033 active COVID-19 cases on Saturday, up from 1,006 cases on Friday.

Barangay Pio del Pilar has the most number of active cases with 155, followed by Barangay Bangkal with 85 and Barangay Poblacion with 70.

Only Barangay PP Northside does not have an active case.

As of March 20, Makati has recorded 13,101 cases of COVID-19 with 11,609 recoveries and 459 deaths since March last year.

Around 2,000 medical frontliners in Makati were inoculated yesterday with AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines.
