MANILA, Philippines — The Senate yesterday approved on third and final reading a bill seeking to modernize and strengthen the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

With 23 votes, senators passed Senate Bill 1832 or the BFP Modernization Act to help the agency pursue its mandate of promoting public safety by saving lives and protecting property in times of emergencies.

Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, chairman of the committee on public order and dangerous drugs, sponsored the measure.

Dela Rosa said the proposed bill seeks to ensure that the BFP would be well-equipped with modern tools and sufficiently manned to respond to fire incidents.

SB 1832 is a substitute measure authored by Senate President Vicente Sotto III, Senators Bong Go, Ramon Revilla Jr. and Dela Rosa.

Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto, Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senators Sonny Angara, Pia Cayetano, Sherwin Gatchalian, Richard Gordon, Imee Marcos, Manny Pacquiao, Grace Poe, Francis Tolentino, Joel Villanueva and Cynthia Villar are co-authors of the bill.

Dela Rosa assured the public that the Senate would ensure funding for the modernization of the BFP.
